2016 Pinot noir Momtazi Vineyard Special Selection - ONLY sold as part of '18 Spring WineClub

This 'tete de cuvee' of Momtazi Vineyard Pinot noir is one of two selections our Winemaker made from 2016 in his ongoing quest to bottle the best Pinot noir that St. Innocent can produce in each vintage. The quantity is minuscule; about 1% of all Pinot noir that Mark makes. These wines are named the Special Selection series.

After more than a year of aging, Mark makes a meticulous barrel selection from the wine produced from the best one or two vineyards for that vintage. The goal is to find the five best barrels that, when blended, capture the most perfect expression of the terroir thus creating the most perfect wine from that vintage. One is new, the others are used barrels to maintain the balance and focus on the site and produce a truely ageable wine.

Vineyard Details

Momtazi Vineyard is located in the McMinnville AVA, 7 miles west of the McMinnville, Oregon.  Planted in 1999 and 2004 on thin, poor soils, the vines have a south and SW exposure at an elevation of 680' - 760'.  The vineyard is planted with Pinot noir 115, 667, 777, and Pommard clones. The vineyard is certified biodynamic by Demeter.

Vintage Description

2016 was the third in a string of warm summers and early harvests. It produced the smallest crop of the three. The harvest began with a bit of heat and dehydration in the fruit. This immediately resolved with cooler temperatures and the rest of the harvest produced well balanced fruit with lovely flavors and ripe tannins. We finished picking at the end of September, producing a total of 10,200 cases. In general 2016 produced lush, early-drinking wines with lovely aromatics and accessible fruit, spice and floral notes. They can be aged and are quite accessible in their youth.

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Special Selection from Momtazi Vineyard exhibits the site's charactoristic dark blue and black fruit, savory spices and mocha and tar notes. What is unique from 2016 is the way the umami texture mesh with the freshness of brightness of the dark fruits to bring a rare clarity to this unique site in the McmInnville appelation. This is only the third Special Selection from Momtazi Vineyard and replaces the previous FUJIN brand. It is worthy of serious consideration. Only available as a FUTURE, it will be released in Fall 2018. Six bottle minimum purchase.
